The Minister of Livestock Development, Mr Idi Maiha, has pledged to partner with the Edo State Ministry of Livestock Development to transform the state’s livestock sector into a regional hub for red meat, poultry, piggery, goats, and cattle production.

This initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader plan to modernize and expand Nigeria’s livestock value chain, boost food security, and create sustainable employment opportunities across the agricultural sector.

Maiha made the commitment following a presentation by Prof. Omorodion Ikpomwosa, the Edo State Commissioner for Livestock Development, during a meeting at the minister’s office in Abuja.

According to the minister, the Federal Ministry will support Edo State in rehabilitating its cattle ranches in Igarra and Ubiaja, two key livestock production areas in the state. The effort, he said, would strengthen local capacity, improve meat processing standards, and establish Edo as a key livestock trade hub for southern Nigeria

Maiha, who is scheduled to conclude an on-the-spot assessment visit to the state in the first quarter of 2026, said the collaboration aims to introduce modern ranching methods, curb open grazing, and encourage private sector investment in livestock production.

He noted that the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a structured national livestock development framework, which includes disease control, feed production, and efficient animal husbandry practices.

Edo State Commissioner Ikpomwosa, in his remarks, highlighted the state’s readiness to partner with the Federal Government to attract investors and improve livestock infrastructure. He stated that Edo’s strategic location and existing resources make it ideal to serve as a regional hub for red meat processing and distribution.

The collaboration is expected to open new opportunities in meat processing, leather production, dairy farming, and animal feed manufacturing, while also reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported livestock products.
