The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) Plc has launched the second phase of its free prepaid meter distribution under “Tranche B” of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) metering programme.
The initiative, introduced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), is designed to bridge the metering gap in Nigeria’s power sector and eliminate the controversial practice of estimated billing.
EEDC, which supplies electricity to the five South-East states — Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Ebonyi — announced the new phase in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Group Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh.
According to Ezeh, the Tranche B phase focuses on unmetered customers connected to Band “A” feeders across the company’s service areas.
“These meters and their installation are completely free. Customers are advised not to make any form of payment to meter installers or yield to any form of inducement or extortion,” Ezeh warned.
He added that the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and improved customer satisfaction, stressing that it will help ensure fairness in billing and strengthen customer trust in the distribution system.
13,335 Customers to Benefit from Tranche B
Ezeh revealed that a total of 13,335 customers under EEDC and its subsidiaries would benefit in this phase, which began on November 2, 2025, with the Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise.
He explained that EEDC successfully completed Tranche A of the MAF metering programme earlier this year, during which 13,614 Band “A” customers received prepaid meters free of charge.
Ezeh said that once the current phase is completed, the company would proceed to Band “B” customers, as part of a structured plan to close the metering gap across the entire South-East network.
He further appealed to customers who may not be captured in this phase to remain patient, noting that another federal initiative, the Distribution Sector Recovery Project (DSRP), is already in progress and will cater to more customers soon.
Call for Compliance and Cooperation
Ezeh urged customers to verify and update their contact details at their local EEDC customer service units to ensure smooth communication during the metering exercise.
“Our team will reach out to customers on this metering programme using the information they have provided in their profiles,” he said.
He also cautioned against meter bypass, energy theft, and other illegal practices, emphasizing that such acts are criminal and punishable under the law.
“Customers should avoid all illegal connections and report anyone involved in energy theft or related crimes. These actions not only affect the company but also reduce the quality of service for other consumers,” Ezeh stated.
