Thierry Mouyouma, head coach of the Gabon national football team, has revealed his tactical blueprint for containing Victor Osimhen and the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their upcoming 2026 World Cup playoff match. The fixture is set for November 13, 2025 in Morocco, and Gabon are keen to advance for a first-ever World Cup berth.

At a press conference, Mouyouma acknowledged the threat posed by Osimhen, emphasising that the Nigerian striker’s unpredictability and movement behind defences demand a special defensive plan. “We have to defend differently when facing a player like him. How do we actually defend against someone with his movement and unpredictability?” Mouyouma asked. “Osimhen loves to play in behind, so we must reduce the space behind our defence. But even when you manage that, he still remains dangerous with set-pieces and corners.”

He added that his team must assert control in Nigeria’s half of the pitch. “This Nigeria team can sit deep and hit you on the counter. We must ensure we play more in their half—that’s the key to controlling the game.” Gabon’s attacking weaponry, including veterans like Pierre‑Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Bouanga, give them cause for confidence, but Mouyouma stressed the tactical duel will be pivotal.

The match comes at a very high-stakes moment for both nations: Nigeria looked to reaffirm its status in African football, while Gabon aim to make history with a maiden World Cup qualification.
