Federal Government Shuts Down All Unity Schools Over Rising Insecurity

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of all Unity Schools across Nigeria following a surge in security threats in several parts of the country. The directive, issued through the Ministry of Education, instructs principals of all Federal Unity Colleges to release students and suspend academic activities until further notice.

According to the ministry, the decision is a precautionary measure aimed at preventing possible attacks on school communities, especially in regions that have recently experienced banditry, kidnapping, and heightened unrest.

Parents have expressed anxiety over the abrupt closure, while education stakeholders warn that the move may further disrupt the already fragile academic calendar. Unity Schools—established to promote national integration—serve thousands of students nationwide, making the shutdown a significant national concern.

The government, however, maintains that student safety remains its priority and assures the public that schools will reopen once the security situation improves.
